You do know that mangaka are notorious for their backgrounds just being pictures and filtered in Clip Studio, right? Meanwhile western comic artists all draw the backgrounds and shit by hand.

western comic books have their roots in newspaper comic strips, which didn't allow much artistic expression due to their size. The format carried on and is still used today. Something like pic rel is more in tune with the typical format of a western comic than the art depicted in Berserk.
Generally speaking now, japan always had a wider perspective in regards to the abilities of visual mediums (specifically; animation, drawing, etc.) as vectors for "mature storytelling" than westerners.
"If it's drawn, it's for kids" is a generally agreed upon view here.

it's just the stuff that's off a graphic nature. Film is very much a visual medium and, in the past at least, westeners have all orientals beat.
We don't have Berserk (for example), Japan doesn't have Meryl Streep.

i made that comparison to accentuate the difference between westener film culture vs the japanese film culture, and as a broader point of which artistic medium get's the lion's share of resources in the west vs Japan.
the next great thespian could be from Japan, but they'll "hit it big" on Broadway/Hollywood.

You can make a point about how online comics places help indie creators but Berserk started in the 90'. Someone had to publish the first volume.
