Out of all the technological advancements, only driving is one where I can think people willingly want to impose older technique and for the dumbest rationale: control.

Ironic.

Unfortunately there are now approximately 0 new manual transmission vehicles being manufactured so that you can be limited to first gear if you piss off the elites

driving is stupid in general and the way american life literally revolves around cars is enough to make me go postal. you got people out here in money pit death traps they can't even afford to maintenance, people driving hours every day just to get to work and back, wasting all of this oil for absolutely fucking nothing, no it's worse than nothing, it's wasted simply because our society is fucking upside down RETARDED.
carfags deserve the apocalypse they are working towards

Control is everything and you're wrong, we greatly resent tech "advancements" that offer less control, from enshittification to obsolescence there is a plethora of examples

autos are a lot faster than manuals now, even torque converter ones. The ZF8 TC found in a lot of cars shifts in around 200ms, a good DCT like the ZF found in Porsches or the Getrag in Ferraris is around 60ms. A good manual shift is 400-500ms, unless you have a sequential dogbox that can do it in ~200ms. And of course you can fuck up a manual shift or even moneyshift it...really all they're good for is driver engagement and maybe skill expression, but nobody cares about that when you're seconds slower around a track than you would be with an auto

that said all 3 of my cars have manuals lol

you know what's faster than pretty much any automatic transmission? a tesla model S plaid. you know what's faster than that? a train.
it was never about speed. it was about driving engagement.

nah, manuals used to be faster until the late oughts when the ZF DCT started appearing in the VW GTI and various Porsches. I don't think there were performance versions of the ZF8 until its 3rd gen late last decade, and the 4th gen of the ZF8 is a lot better. torque converters used to be slow as shit to shift, heavy, wouldn't hang on to gears at high revs, and caused 10-30% hp loss depending on how far back you want to go, which translated into worse fuel economy in addition to worse performance. And a lot of automatics were unreliable and expensive as fuck to fix, while servicing a manual is easier, but these days it seems like a lot of manuals are more prone to eating shit and costing $$$ to fix than automatics are. anyway, it wasn't purely about engagement as it is now

in my country, you get a different license if you decide to go for a manual or an auto transmission
with the manual license though, you can drive both kinds, and its cheaper too
