It is a joke, however even with shows like these they attempt to wrap storylines up with a positive moral or message that can be taken seriously. They literally wrapped this one up with it being okay because he still loved him and didn't need to know.

There is power behind these not so subtle messages in television and movies, and it does have an influence on people and our perception.

The message of the episode is despite how weird Dale is, he is the only morally good parent. Meanwhile John Redcorn is always depicted as being a loser and hypocrite who is unhappy. The show always has Dale be shown as doing the right thing in episodes that involve both him and John, and John feeling inadequate or bad because of how he treats others.
