it is less direct, in a sense that you don't have to directly ask for her number for the sake of her number which can feel cringe or forceful, the intentions shift from "getting her number" to just wanting to continue the nice conversation from just now when you both have time, and you obviously have to exchange numbers to arrange that.
Another thing is, now that you exchanged numbers, the first date is pretty much set up. You don't need to figure out a potentially akward way to ask her on a date.
