It did this primarily by making virtues of the very things that slaves were already required to do (Blessed are the meek, Matthew 5.5-9, et al.) and also by being a form of proto-communism. (It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle that for a rich man to enter the gates of heaven. Mark 10:25)
As Rome had a great many slaves and plebians who were forced by circumstance to be meek and poor, the idea that there was a god who thought these things made them better people (instead of just unfortunate losers) really struck a chord. Eventually it became so popular that Emperor Constantine converted to christianity after having some wacky "vision", and eventually Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire. Sadly, this cultural change caused the rapid decline and fall of the Roman Empire. But by this time Christianity had been spread to all corners of the western world.
