once you realize the people here are bitter and hateful, the friendship simulator kind of loses its luster, but nothing else really simulates company as much as an active message board. what do you do?

I don't think everybody is. I'd like to believe there are a lot of lurkers here that aren't, and that it's just the loud posters that are so hateful.
And besides. I still need to simulate friends somehow.

you have to force it which nobody wants to do. strike up a conversation with someone at work or wherever you go regularly. the problem at least for me is nobody interests me as a friend. obviously you have to get to know people in order to know if they're truly worthy of getting to know.
most people just don't wanna put in that kind of work, myself included.
usually when you think youre hopeless you're either mentally ill or you know what you have to do you just don't wanna do it so badly that you've ruled it out

Nowhere. People go to bars with their friends, stores to browse and buy and attend activities to focus on said activity, not to converse with strangers.
Basically the only places where I've seen general mingling happen have been concerts since the attendees share a reason to be there and there's plenty of non-seated downtime outside the performances. But then you face the issue of actually having those events near you, which might happen once or twice a year depending on where you live and what kind of music you like.
