if you want an easy entry into woodworking I'd suggest something Morakniv, you can have a very decent workknife (e.g. companion heavy duty) or woodcarver's knife from them for 20-30 dollars, the former is enough for batoning firewood, basic carving and is really rugged (like 3mm thick).
if you can carve a bit of wood then all you need is to find a nice branch, cities have trees too. I've made a nice smoking pipe like this, with homemade glue too.
