It's social pressure and poor self-identity. They might be smarter than you, they might not be. Regardless this has nothing at all to do with intelligence other than their social conditioning. Many people who grow up as the smart kid have people expect them to always have the answer for everything; including topics they aren't versed in. Now combine this with someone whose only value to others was being the smart kid, and you'll see a lot of people who do this to try and be accepted. They don't think they'll be liked any other way.
