All identity begins as a LARP, which after you do it enough becomes habituated, which after it's been habituated long enough becomes internalized, then after it's been internalized long enough you identify with it and that becomes who you are. This is why "fake it till you make it" works, and it's how children form personalities by simplistically mirroring the behavior of those around them

You're conflating development and imitation/adaptation. Identity can be shaped and changed through conscious actions, but if you are motivated by superficial appearances and playing a role rather than the underlying reasons that the role/identity exists, then no you don't actually get to the "make it" part, you just look like a fake piece of shit forever to anyone who knows you well.

Learning something, whether it's a conscious effort or naturally part of your environment, is not faking anything. You are simply growing and adding to your experiences. Faking till you makingmaxx is a separate concept that works when the experience is not as valuable as confidence in yourself, or the perception of having experience like in consulting or theater or art. In general, you should bee yourself and develop skills and knowledge organically and be honest with where you are and where you want to be.

I agree, I think. The reason "faking it till you make it" makes you a shallow person is because the model which you internalize - in most cases, a young man's idea of a generic "Chad" - is 2-dimensional. Being confident for the sake of being confident is a personality based on nothing, as contrasted against developing confidence through self-actualization and the refinement of your innate preferences and nature into "the best version of yourself"
