Lately, i've been thinking about a social phenomenon that's been happening since i was a kid but i only really noticed it recently. I'm left wondering if it's just me or if anons deal with it too.
Here's the thing: When i'm hanging out with a buddy one-on-one, everything's cool,they act normal, we vibe, no issues. But the second another person gets added to the group, suddenly they feel this need to put me down to make me look bad in front of others. It's like they start dunking on me out of nowhere, and it's everyone i know doing this shit.
You could say they're just two-faced, but does that really explain every single person following the same pattern? I'm not looking for a solution (mine is simple: don't let them get too comfortable with you), but i do wanna know, does this happen to anyone else, or is it just me?

unfortunately, sometimes that thing is a person - but in that moment, they don't care, the need to fit in and conform trumps all

Yeah this shit is always the case. Unless all three people gel and are comfortable around each other there will always be an attempt to develop a pecking order.

honestly, sometimes I think my "friends" want me around just to better enhance themselves

you know how when theres a group photo, if you're a 3/10 and the guy next to you is a 5/10? by virtue of you being there, that 5/10 is instantly bumped to 7/10 because folks who see that photo now have a point of reference for "ugly" as in, you (and me)
