Why do outdoor theaters basically not exist anymore? They were kino.

You can't show a cute girl a movie playing on your phone and create a memory with that (or hook up in the back seat)

Add subway surfers gameplay.
That should be enough to attract modern audiences.

It's dumb is why. I don't want to have to lay a blanket down on the lawn or listen to the movie through the radio in my car. I'll stick to the tried and true movie theatres.

Why not do it yourself? Years ago I bought a cheap projector on ebay and would project my xbox onto the side of the house I was renting. Sat around in lawnchairs with my roommate and some friends drinking, playing games, watching dvds. The projector was something like $50 and I had so many great nights with it.

You can actually get theater-quality projectors for like $300-$400 now too. They're not as cost-prohibitive as they used to be.

Sounds like you could set up your own theater pretty easily out in some field

I've been to a couple.
They could never get the sound right; here, they're not allowed to just have big speakers, or broadcast short range FM, so every car gets a shitty (so you don't steal it) mono speaker using some other frequency that barely works and sounds bad.

Taking goofy little steps like that to circumvent piracy in 2025 is funny. Everybody learned how to torrent 20 years ago. Its like banning books in libraries when the kids have unrestricted internet access.

Probably cause no one wants to sit outside in muggy hot weather when you can go to a movie theater and be cool. AC in commercial buildings wasn't all that great until like the 60's-70's and people didn't have AC at home in the US till like the 80s so people were just used to being hot and sticky anyways.

There's a pretty short window of actually comfortable weather to go to a drive-in and a business can't operate on only a few months of income when every bit of land is being fought over by corporate interests.

I'm pulling all this out of my ass but it sounds kind of right no?

I recently went to one and it was a TERRIBLE experience. The screen was tiny and barely visible through my windshield, way too dim even at night, and the place didn't have any speakers because they make you tune into an fm radio station they broadcast on but my car won't let me use the radio without the lights being on and people were fucking yelling at me telling me to turn my car off and the guy in front of me angrily came over to my car looking like he was going to fight me so I just left early and people clapped as I drove away

Not profitable. They were a novelty at best.
They took up more land space for fewer seating, which means even less ticket or concession revenue per movie than a traditional movie theater. On top of that, with home movie rentals becoming increasingly popular (and today there's streaming services) there was just even less incentive to go to a drive-in.

Not to mention that even if a new one were to pop up today, a lot of modern cars are becoming increasingly unfriendly to drive-ins. Like >>81786774 , my car can't have any electronics run while the engine is off thanks to the push-button start, and it has small lights on the front that can't EVER be turned off even when the headlights are off, and they're bright white.

I went to one recently and it's just not the same.
Modern Americans have no respect for anyone else's space or experience.
Oversized pickups blocking half the screen.
People were blasting obnoxious hiphop, everyone was on their phones, half-mile lines at the concession stand, everyone was fat and gross.
Nothing like when I was a kid. It used to be cool. Just pull up, set the station on your radio and enjoy. People were more social back then, everyone just wanted to vibe and enjoy the movie and experience.

No, I meant stealing the actual speakers (although the shitty audio might indeed also be to discourage piracy).
It was particularly absurd when the films weren't even recent.

There'll be a fuse you can pull, although it's not worth the hassle, especially if you forget to put it back and get pulled over.

I used to live pretty close to one, it was cheaper than a normal theater usually showing 2 movies, it was fun in some ways with the novelty of driving and walking around.
There were a few issues, the place I went to would start in the evening but not quite dark so for the first part the image would be pretty crappy but just good enough.
The speaker you had on the windows didn't sound that good, just acceptable.
Seating just not that comfortable since you have to look up slightly, you could sit outside as an alternative, still only acceptable.
Often the 2nd movie would be second rate so you'd have people driving away when they realized it wasn't that good.

I think I went 3 times mainly for the novelty of it, it was fun buying a hotdog in the middle of the movie while walking on the gas. For actually paying attention to the movie it was not that good and the real theaters got better. I had fun but I think after 3 times I'd seen enough.

>>81786843
Yep, back then people had normal sized cars.

>>81786892
I just never really have that issue, I wait a couple of weeks and most of the theater is empty so I can sit where I want. People pretending a home setup is in anyway comparable are coping so much. I know you aren't but some people online really think an 80 inch tv is similar but its just not.

Outdoor theaters were frequented by sub5 males. It's better to find people online and meet at their place, you can filter out sub5s without even chatting with them.
