Why is it necessary for videogames to have a story?

It's not. You have your sports games, fighting games, and shooter games which have no stories at all.

It's not. Beyond certain bits of lore I don't expect plot out of something like PUBG or Mario Kart, for instance.

Oh no you don't get it you have to sit through 10 hours of cutscenes that cost 80 million dollars or it isn't AAA

Fiction only needs to inspire imagination.

Mostly this but also becaues most people don't really like games they rather watch 10 hours of cutscenes and play 10 min of gameplay and then say they are gamers lmao.

I actually just really do love the storytelling of soulslikes. I like that we are not the most important person, I like that we get to explore the world organically and need to figure things out. That gives the purest dopamine hits. It is like getting to know an interesting person. It's entirely different from no story at all. If there is no "lore" behind it there is nothing to explore and be surprised at.
I do think that this is what games are truly supposed to be. An actual adventure where you have no idea where you are going or supposed to be going but things just end up falling into their places anyways.

I would agree with you if souls games had the content to support that.
