What is up with all those internet people who have seemingly seriously lost the ability to consume fiction without imagining it's themselves in the place of some character in it, typically some kind of really loserish nondescript character of their own sex, and why are they all clearly such utter socially inept permavirgins?

This is so weird, some absolutely fifth rate character in some action drama where everyone gets screwed over in loses some love interest and the comment section is full of "Nooooo, the whore betrayed him! Noooo, this is cuckshit! Nooooooo, I'm so angry" while other characters literally get their limbs ripped off and are brutally tortured and 3 more characters lose a love interest or something but they only get angry about that one because he's an introverted passive loser with no personality or something?

This is a /lit/ post but it's because characters are so poorly written these days and by women mostly, who don't understand men. Meanwhile, the cognitive zeitgeist for stories is built historically around men, so women write a caracature of that if they don't strike out on their own, which is rare considering all the repetative romance slop out there. People self-insert side characters when every character is objectively unlikable or uninteresting and built to be a self-insert story as a crutch, especially when it's not for you. I wouldn't, for example, expect a woman reading a shitty isekai(that mostly works on video game autism rather than using a rich perviously loaded by other stories detailed setting) to give a shit about the MC and not the side characters.

Also, it's because society has stripped most people of their personhood in favor of animosity toward outside groups. Leftists dehumanize Trump voters. "Christians" dehumanize trannies. Incels dehumanize women. Feminists dehumanize men. Vaxers dehumanize anti-vaxers. You can't be a scientist without dehumanizing flat Earth bigfoot enjoyers. You can't exist in today's day and age within a group without being forced to outcast and mistreat a significant number of people. Our identities are used as weapons, and when you get attached to a character who is not your identity, suddenly you might change(which puts you in danger and opens yourself up to being used) and you might need to see other people as human(which puts you in danger and opens you up to being used.)

if that's your point you didn't really spell it out very well in the OP. anyway if you actually read the excerpt i provided you would realize that the low mimetic mode is the type of fiction you get when the hero is supposed to be just like the viewer. to that end we don't call them a hero because they're too close to our daily life.
