Doesn't apply to me personally but I will not disagree. One could derive motivation from the content one consumes (sports could be motivation to be fitter, movie and book characters could be motivation to be a better person, for example) and, in my opinion, that's the correct way to consume any art. But most people, men and women, would rather live vicariously through performers and characters. It's a strange phenomenon where just witnessing a better person is enough and they don't feel the need to improve anymore.
Side note, I was paying attention to my nephews the other day. They were watching cartoons and they picked characters to self insert as in the most literal and innocent way
