They didn't take over the world in the movies either. In the lore they can only inhabit a small band around the equator because the climate and atmosphere of modern earth isn't what their bodies were adapted to.

The book wasn't about them taking over the world, it was about the futility of attempting to play god, and showed the fact that even animals as ill suited to the modern day, and comparatively stupid as dinosaurs managed to totally defy their creators and behave in unexpected and uncontrollable ways. In the book, the military destroyed the island and the dinos all died. It was about the consequences of playing god.
