A few months ago I weighed 240lbs, most I've ever weighed by a lot.
Finally buckled down and started going to the gym and dieting.
I used to diet every few months in college when I would put on a few pounds, I was alway successful with it to.
I figured that this time should be no different.

The first week was great, I lost 10 pounds really easily, getting down to 230lbs.
I was going to the gym 3 times a week, doing weights and cardio
I also completely cut sugar out of my diet, no more soda at all, I only drink water.
I paid more attention to what I was eating, made sure to eat mostly protein and vegetables.
I really feel like I've been doing a great job with this whole thing.

Here is the problem, flash forward 2 months now and I've gained 4 pounds. I'm at 234 current.
Literally how is this possible? I feel like I've done everything right, I'm even working out now
and I'm completely failing to lose weight, something that was easy for me in college when I would just starve myself.
I don't understand how this is physically possible.

Your weight will yo-yo like that, you're not a machine bro. Just don't sweat it and keep at it.

The only positive answer I've heard is that I'm in the middle of "Body Recomposition" and the reason my weight is stagnant is because I've been lifting weights and gaining muscle mass which is replacing my fat.
But still, I just remember not so long ago I was able to starve myself back down to 200lbs really easily. It seems like I should be losing more weight this time because I'm doing more and being more proactive about it.
I honestly expected to be back down to 200lbs by this point, it only took me a month of fasting before. Its kind of demotivating because I just wanna be skinnier I don't really care about muscles.

There are three main things to consider:
>Inaccurate caloric intake
You may be overestimating your caloric intake. Using a gram scale and/or prepackaged foods can help with this.
>Muscle gain
When you're fat and exercise down, even with a modest deficit, you're likely to build at least some muscle in the process because you're utilizing muscles that weren't activated before. Muscle weighs more than fat; a 12% body fat guy at 70kg/175cm is going to be way trimmer and muscular-looking than a 25% blob at the same 70kg/175cm.
>Fluctuations in weigh-ins due to poor consistency
Basically, the ideal way to weigh in (and compare) is to do it after you wake up in the morning and relieve yourself (before any food/liquid). You should do this on the same day of the week to make a week by week comparison.

Even if you do all this, frankly, there is so much that can occur and fuck up your weigh-ins even if you actually do make progress. While it is still very useful, I strongly recommend you give a shot at weekly body measurements. While your bodyweight may fluctuate due to many factors, measurements tend to reveal progress in spite of that. For example, I've been cutting from 74kg to low 70s over 6 weeks, but I'm currently hovering around 72kg. I could go "fuck, I'm just getting fat", but then I see how my body measurements suggest consistent composition changes, and I'm fine again.

You increased your muscle mass and reduced your fat. Stay the course your body wont have fat reserves forever. Try not paying attention to your weight and more attention to your actual body composition. Keep lifting, 230 and muscular is much different than 230 and just fat.

Weight loss is like 70% diet. Starving yourself/fasting will lose weight far faster than diet and regular exercise if your only goal is just losing weight. That said, going slow with proper diet and exercise is more beneficial for obvious reasons so just keep at it.

Plateaus and minor weight fluctuation are common/expected.
If you're working out frequently you may lose fat but gain muscle, so you end up weighing the same.

Don't give up.
