It was actually the opposite, I breezed through all of my classes without ever really trying. I would never really pay much attention in class and would just learn whatever I needed to at home to complete my homework. 90% of my teachers sucked, the other 10% were pretty cool and I did actually learn things in their classes.
The one truly standout teacher I had in HS got fired for essentially being too good at his job and making the other teachers look bad by comparison.

The largest issue is that classes could only be as rigorous or fast paced as the lowest common denominator could handle.

Public education is primarily funded at the state level. It is the single biggest line item in all 50 state budgets. DoE is a federal department, meaning this has nothing to do with state education funding. These aren't teachers and principals losing jobs, just useless bureaucrats with fake jobs.

There have been NUMEROUS studies that show conclusively "more money != better grades".
Chicago or Detroit I forget which is one of the best funded school districts in the nation. It's a black hole for black students.
Standards also fell with the implementation of the "no child left behind" act, Bush if I recall correctly so it's not like I'm blaming democrats exclusively here.
Look at highschool tests from the 50s, more challenging material than what the tests are nowadays despite spending ample amounts of money.

The education system has been awful here so here the DoE has failed to serve its purpose.
More important, education is handled at the state and local level so the DoE bordered on being a superfluous agency.
Losing it isn't a big deal at all, and won't affect education in the country one way or the other.
