From the average american perspective, all indians are the same (and not seen favorably).
From the slightly historical context perspective, aryans implemented it to prevent miscegenation, failed, and the remnants of the caste system remain despite it being largely useless as they're all mixed now.

Second question would be: from my perspective, a caste system is largely hierarchical. Yet I've seen people take great pride in being Sudra, which seems a little odd to me.
