there's absolutely nothing else like dbz out there despite the fact that it set all the fundamental archetypes for all the shonen that came next and aped dragon ball wholesale without shame. even so, it's totally unique among its peers and among anime in general. dbz was also a product of its time and nothing like it could exist today, it is entirely a creation of the 80s and 90s and modern anime is another universe apart from it in every aspect, in a bad way i would argue.

Most anime past 2010 is crap though you're not missing anything. I haven't watched anime in years, already saw the good stuff. Too old for mainstream shounen/shoujo/moeslop, they don't make enough good seinens. Last I checked was the Fable and the anime was mediocre. Manga was great though.
