Christianity has shifted gears so many times in the last 1700 years it's barely the same religion as when it started.

Remember Nestorianism? Of course you don't, it was a branch of Christianity that spread to China in 424 AD that believed Christ was two entities in one body. Half-human half-deity. For four-hundred years it was one of the most popular religions in China. There were monasteries and churches, thousands of followers, Chinese language Bibles. The Tang dynasty got sick of foreigners promoting religions and made it illegal in the 9th century, driving Nestorians out of China.

Somehow to this day there are over 150k Nestorian practitioners in tiny pockets of rural Asia, but otherwise the movement is gone.

That's just one of the over 45,000 (recognized) sub-denominations of Christianity that have existed since the mad rabbi got stuck to a pole.
