Service sucks nowadays. Waiters dont even pretend to be nice anymore, same with any cashier or I guess assistant in any store. You try to be polite and they just give you nothing but a blank expression and one word response at best. Whats worse is that if you match the energy they get even more pissy. Its almost like as a customer youre the one expected to be kind and service workers are allowed to be complete assholes.

The blank expression has a name. Search zoomer stare and you will see other people talking about it. I think it is tied to their attitude about not owing anyone anything. Even when they are at work, they will do the bare minimum of their job and treat customers as annoyances. Pride and respect are alien terms to them. They say "well, I don't owe you my kindness". Baffling. I worked as a receptionist for several years and I know how to treat people with respect. Sometimes you are the only human an elderly or shut in person sees all day so it doesn't kill you to have some basic decency. I have a soul though

I'm not in retail anymore thank God but those are just the most awful, soul crushing jobs around. I moved from cashier to shopping cart gatherer thinking that it would be better because I wouldn't have to interact with people. Too bad everyone at that job was an asshole because every five minuted they'd call me to stop doing my actual job and instead cash someone out or move a pallet with something heavy to someone's car while they talk incessantly about the most mundane shit imagineable. Like no I don't give a shit about why you're buying this TV. It's a fucking TV.

Then was the job as a janitor and everyone would not shut the fuck up either but that time most of the people didn't speak any english at all so that was even more annoying.

So now I'm a cashier again, at least I found a place that is tolerable because my coworkers hate the people as much as I do so we can vent about that as soon as they leave.
