sometimes I get the desire to learn japanese after seeing the language and culture, but when I remember how insanely difficult and tedious learning it is I don't even attempt to try. It is somewhat annoying, I think learning and knowing japanese would be very fun, but it's just too monumental of a task. Maybe if I were a NEET and turboweeb it'd be worth it, but besides that it's just too much of a time sink that takes too long with too much effort. Kanji is really the main issue too, I couldn't imagine needing to learn the rules, just to learn that the rules apply to like 40% of kanji, then needing to learn multiple kanji for the same word, and needing to learn every word at least twice for kanji.

everyone who hasn't started learning japanese is scared of the kanji but once you get into it the kanji are basically irrelevant to the difficulty

I personally want to learn Chinese rather than Japanese. Japan is kinda irrelevant globally besides pop culture and Japanese people notoriously hate foreigners and avoid them. I think Chinese culture is a bit more open in comparison.

Too bad I'm fucking retarded though and i'm really bad at being disciplined and committed to one area of study.

I remember when I was 10 I begged my mom to let me take chinese classes, but we couldn't because they were too far away. It is definitely too late for me to learn it when my brain is fully developed now and it is almost 10x more difficult as an adult to learn a new language.

you get used to it and a lot of manga has furigana so you can just look up words you don't know
however, particles are a nightmare and the grammar makes no sense to JSLs

hey bro, i've been learning japanese for a bit (i'm still a brand new beginner and am dogshit at it),
but in my experience, it's not actually THAT hard, I'm actually making a lot of progress. Here's my secret: don't learn kanji!!!!!!!!
LOL
FUUUUUUUCK kanji dude i'm not going to bother with that trash unless i'm actually going to japan. I'm going to only work on the fun stuff that I enjoy that allow me to communicate with silly japanese people on vrchat, and no farther than that. pretty simple, huh? Learn a couple of important rules (such as the syntax for adjectives and nouns, whatever)
and, like, 2000 words, and like, a few dozen phrases, and in like 5 years you're middle tier conversational. Pretty nifty, probably. I'll let you know in another 4.5 years.
