to give you a genuine, honest answer: it depends on the kind of person you are and your circumstances. assuming you're american and you don't care much about the fact that there's not a lot to do here, then romania would be the perfect place to retire for you since the cost of living is mega cheap by US standards. living here as a native is pretty dreadful because the economy gets worse every year, there's not much to do (which is why a lot of people just resort to alcohol and drugs to get their kicks) and in my personal case, i just have no ways to meet people who're similar to me.

Romanian people can literally just buy a train ticket to any other EU country with a high standard of living and start working there. You can go to University for basically free. You have plenty of opportunities stop complaining. People from actual shit countries need a visa to literally go to any country, have no work rights in any other country, make less than $400 a month, have insane amounts of corruption in their government, and on top of that the cost of living is not even that low.

I am originally from Vietnam, the average salary is $200 a month there. You can survive on that if you want to live like a beggar, but you won't have internet or basically anything resembling a western life. You need about $1000 a month to have a normal life and almost nobody makes that. Our passport lets us go to a few other third world countries, mostly in southeast asia. If we want to travel to Europe we need to wait weeks or months for an appointment and even then it's unlikely we will get a tourist visa unless we have consistent employment for years or a home in our name. Even if we somehow get a tourist visa, that doesn't give us the right to work and there's no pathway towards immigration legally speaking. All you can do is become an illegal immigrant and work manual labor jobs under the table and barely survive. Being born in an actual third world country is hell. Romania is heaven in comparison.
