That lawsuit wasn't actually as frivolous as the headlines make it seem. The 80-something-year-old woman who sued McDonald's over the coffee thing sued because she needed skin grafts all over her crotch and thighs, and the amount of money she asked for wasn't even that much. It was barely even enough to cover her medical bills. The employees working at that McDonald's location heated the coffee to a temperature way beyond what they were supposed to for efficiency purposes, but the coffee was so hot it damn near melted the cup that contained it. McDonald's essentially spend a shitload of money running a smear campaign branding the lawsuit as frivolous and excessive in an attempt to get the lawsuit dismissed and fuck with whatever trials did take place but were ultimately unsuccessful and had to pay more than what the plaintiffs sought specifically for that stunt.
