what are some opening questions in a conversation I can ask to subtlely ascertain whether I'm speaking to a hylic or not?

I usually just ask if they've ever had any paranormal or supernatural experiences. If they say no, they're usually an athiest. I've had several out of body experiences that led to me reading a lot occult literature to learn more and most people have no interest in things like that because if they've never had any first hand experience with something from beyond the veil of our reality, they struggle to imagine that it could even exist.

Give a brief synopsis of the world and society in Brave New World (its up to you if you want to explicitly state what book it's from, but I feel like the most normal sounding way to ask this would be "Hey I just started reading a book called Brave New World and...") and ask if they'd like to live in a world like that.
I know a guy who's the very image of a hylic, bases his entire life's perceived value on wearing expensive clothes and fucks at least 3 random women a month just for bragging rights and when I had a conversation with him about literature (as you would expect he had only read biographies from those "alpha male" influencer types as audiobooks while working out) I described the book and he said "I don't get how that's a dystopia, that sounds like heaven if it was real".

Do you have an inner monologue? If you can't think beyond an instinctual, wordless, abstract level, it may be a bad sign. If there were ever a sign that someone was a soulless NPC meatbag husk, wouldn't it be that? Not saying it's true, no one can know for sure if background people truly exist, but it is a rather compelling idea to consider. I think philosophically we can accept this, but practically, we have to treat everyone as if they're real people with free will even if the hylic/NPC and determinism pill is true.

You gotta be able to think in both ways. If there's one or the other thinking missing, then one is an NPC.

NPCs operate via instinct like driving a car and not knowing the last 5 miles but their whole life

I agree. Nothing wrong with going on autopilot for low-intensity mental tasks. My problem is with "people" who stay there.
