Identity is whatever you want it to be. Others can give it to you, you can make it, you can change it if you want. I'm a new person to everyone I meet. Why not? It doesn't really matter so just have fun with it.

identity is built on what's happening inside and outside of you, its not something to fake. where you kidnapped by an evil scientist as child and told you'd become something they said or what?

No matter how many personas you adopt it is still you. All it means is that you are a person that likes doing personas.

You can't fake something that isn't real to begin with. If you want to be brave, be brave. If you want to be a coward, be a coward. Identity is a construct. The identity you associate with yourself and the identity others associate with you are different even. So present how you want, exist internally as you want. It's more fun that way.

I can change my interior presentation on a dime. Nothing matters so what does any singular position matter? I like this, I hate this, I don't care about this. I can shift through them however I please. I'm not doing personas, I'm just shifting myself to be whatever suits the moment the best.

Then that means that your core self is just someone who doesn't care about things. From the exterior it looks like your shifting personalities but you just told me what you are. That's why you were able to identify yourself and tell me.

See? People just know who they are unless you're like some trauma victim or severely disassociated.

I'm still not really comfortable with that idea.
What does an abstract social concept like """Identity'"" mean without other people to agree on it with?
It's like saying you can have a nationality or a friendship if you were the only person on earth.
What meaning do social constructs have for one person, just in and of themselves?

That was my first assumption but I like being kind. There's plenty of dumb kids who genuinely believe they are cynical and evil. And everyone around here seems young and stupid like you.

I really don't think that identity is as solid as you stated though. Personal identity shifts a lot for most people as they age and you have a lot of control over 'who' you are. I would actually argue that most people don't know who they are because they never really have to think about it or get placed into a situation that tests the limit of their 'who'. Ultimately, I don't think that identity actually matters much though. It's just what stitches your moments together so your existence feels cohesive.

Identity exists as two separate things. How others see you, how you see yourself. If you see yourself as a cute girl, then your self identity is a cute girl. You can't control how other people see you for the most part.

you've got it now
a few anons in this thread have the right idea too - as a child, we're a blank canvas, and through our environments, our upbringing, the people we meet along the way, all of them had a hand in shaping us

for example, my dad was a big 90's rock guy, guy had everything from Nirvana to Alice in Chains, Motley Crue, Pearl Jam, etc. and that helped shape my taste in music
My mom is religious so I grew up in a very religious environment, I'm not *as* religious but I still keep faith

That's what it's all about, an amalgamation of personalities and traits you picked up on - that's what makes you you, because somehow you managed to blend it all together and make it work

>"what is the nature of man?"
thats way above my pay grade

i dont think all of us *has* a specific nature, especially now in the modern age
look at the animals, all they do is be born, survive, reproduce, and then die
is that really *our* nature too?

can a black person become a white person through environment and upbringing alone?
can a male become a female through environment and upbringing alone?
even your personality is due to biological effects of your upbringing

oh, i see now - we're not on the same wavelengths you and i
see, thats where we have our differences - you're shallow, you see skin, you see gender, i see what's beyond that, i see the deeper parts of Man

>black to white
skin colour? of course not, but that's not his call, was never his call - but if we're implying the black guy is a "barbarian" and the white man is "civilized" then why can't the black guy *be* civilized?
what's stopping him from putting on a suit and tie, talk in the Queen's English, and just generally be an upstanding citizen? himself?

Runners want to advertise health.
Soldiers want to get paid.
Men want to have sex with women.
Whites want to destroy the world.
You're not disagreeing.
