You only notice the bad homeless. There are many homeless who are functioning members of society. Living with your parents is a kind of homelessness technically. Even if you have a roof over your head most people live in a situation where they can be immediately evicted from "their" home at any time.

also I think the homelessness causes the drug addiction in many cases, drugs sound a lot more appealing when you have to deal with sleeping outdoors and knowing your society threw you away
