I think my brother has OCD. He refuses to say anyone's name, and will use a description or nickname instead. He also refuses to use gendered pronouns. Saying "they" instead. That one started because he didn't want to admit cats have a gender. He said they're objects, and objects don't have a gender. But now it spread out to everyone. If you tell him to look at something he will refuse to look at it like it's his sole mission in life. When a cashier asks his name he spells it. When you ask him where something is he doesn't tell you directly like "it's in the dish rack." instead he'll say "it's over there." Without gesturing. Only looking. I guess because he doesn't want to say the name of the location.

What do these particular fixations tell you about him? Is he just a troll who trolled too hard for his own good? Or is there a deeper issue.

That sounds pretty severe and distressing for him anon. How old is he? He sounds like he could really benefit from some cognitive behavioural therapy. But it's a tricky thing to bring up..

He's 30. He doesn't think there's anything wrong with him. I have ocd and I've been on meds for it.
One time we were at the vet and he referred to the cat as "they" and the vet said "there's more than one of them?"
