It was a statement the WHO put out to explain to normies how bad it was, the comparisons are based off how many years shaved off your life the two get you. The clinical reason why social isolation causes earlier death is more interesting.

That wasn't one of the considerations other than highlighting social isolation makes all mental illnesses worse. The primary considerations were the following; lifestyle (lonely people are more likely to have bad lifestyles to cope), cognitive decline (lacking social communication is a risk factor for this), worse outcomes for serious ailments, and the shocking one was that loneliness increases cortisol production which causes a much higher risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke.
