It was less serious overall. The population was mostly from Something Awful and people were more interested in edgy humor than politics, on /b/ anyway I didn't use the other boards back then. /b/ had significantly less pornography on it too. If there was a political alignment it was towards libertarianism or anarcho-nihilism similar to how the early web was.

NSFW stuff was off-limit for /a/ too. memes typically consisted of a picture with big font white text captioned under or on it. most users were in their teens so it was slightly more immature. but at its heart 4chan is one of those sites that hasn't changed much.
