I was trying to explain to my friends, who are mostly hispanic, that I don't consider Italians, any Semitics, Greeks, or Eastern Euros to be the same race as me and they were very confused. To them everyone that has lighter skin than them is just "white." When in reality I feel very different from pretty much anyone that isn't some blend of anglo, norman, or celt.
I guess in an American context, I understand what they mean, but I'm not really "white" I'm anglo. My "whiteness" is way different than an italian guy's whiteness or a russian guy's whiteness.
