i used it for years and switched back to windows in 2023. its getting close to being usable, but too many essential softwares and games dont support it yet.

Gentoo would be too complicated for my parents because troubleshooting is more involved. Gentoo has such a good guide I do not even find it hard but you know how it is. Ubuntu I will never recommend however yeah.

I tried mint on one older PC that had a dual boot SSD, and for some reason it just would not, no matter what I did, detect a wifi adaptor.
Then I tried Ubuntu which seemed to have an issue with the SSD and would not boot at all. Troubleshooted it down to the fact that Ubuntu wanted to, for whatever reason, boot from the HDD which I could not stop no matter what I did.

Linux is great for old laptops with open BIOS though, would recommend

You can also just go into ur linux installation and just delete gnome LUL nothing is stopping you just make sure u know what you're doing for better or worse if you know bash and linux system you're in total control can even make your own UNIX based OS

Jokes aside Ubuntu is the best, easiest and I recommend it first installation alot of corpos and universities use it if you want something where you can control everything then try Arch and then also mint is there too Redhat is good if you wanna set up a firewall/internet and are into secops/sysadmin but yeah mostly for corpos

Mint got easier to install than Windows sometime in the last decade (my ex made me do a Windows install on her laptop and that shit was painful, whether it was bad USB support in the laptop, it kept refusing to boot from the Windows 10 .iso).
