I was there, the small groups and more personal networking made it fun. There was no absurdity fake and real fans until about 2005 when the anime invasion peak and drop and you could really find good people.

popularity creates a common denominator issue, when it's a handful of people they are just there for the love of the craft/hobby. when it's 20k+ you are seeing a lot of people there to find a church in pop culture or back fill their life failings with quirkiness.

It's far more common than it used to be. Social media is a cancerous growth on humanity and that we have let it proliferate so much speaks to our lack of foresight. Social media turns everything into competition, every social interaction and outing becomes a chance to harvest more "clout" on the internet.
