Worked my ass off for 6 years to get a BSc and MSc in CS. My BSc was math heavy, then for my MSc I had a physics minor as well.
I initially wanted to work at CERN and then saw the abysmal salary they proposed, so I applied to Optiver, used that my professional network to move to the US. Every single step of the way, I thought I was doing all this for myself, but in reality I was just desperate for external validation through my career, skills and status.

Quant trading is now the new FAANG though, i.e. it used to be a niche for highly technical people, got popular and now the field is full of california-raised asian american tryhards who have no hobby in life besides resumemaxxing so its much harder to break into.

To work at a quant firm as a programmer, just become a god at c++ or rust and ofc have strong DSA, if youre also a Verilog/HLS fag like me then you have MUCH less competition because most CS grads skip their digital design / circuits classes so its a great way to differentiate yourself. Eventually you want to join the cool kids doing RnD then you absolutely need to be a God at stochastic calculus. Personally had a lot of classes on stochastic models and probabilistic methods so it wasnt an issue.
