I'm doing the same shit when my fear of rejection starts turning up when chatting with (potential) dates. I've probably hurt a lot of women that way, including a distant colleague that cancelled a harmless appointment because of another appointment, and I assumed that she perceived it as a romantic approach.

I know. I thought that she cancelled the appointment because of the fact that I've told her about having a panic attack once and she may have lost respect. Actually, she suggested to hang out together because we're both postdocs in a country where we have a hard time connecting with others due to the language barrier. So I suggested, we might visit a classical concert together and booked places (which were free, btw). When she cancelled because of a duty in church, I've assumed that she considered the concert as an attempt to date her, and that she thought of me as less because of the panic attack. So I also didn't answer when she asked how the concert was. In hindsight, it was probably nonsensical to ghost her but I'm getting socially worse with each day that I'm working in that place, with almost no one to talk to properly.

I should add that I didn't consider her as a date but this problem goes beyond dating.
