God wanted them to kill themselves. It was part of his plan, and by committing suicide, they damned themselves eternally, which was also part of his plan. God decides who goes to heaven or hell before they are born, and not everyone can get into heaven.

Also you can put yourself in such a bad situation through sin, where an optimal solution is suicide. Examples of this in the Old Testament are Saul and Samson, the former being confirmed to be in heaven and the latter quoted as an example of faith in the NT.
