Then social media happened and now every idiot's voice is disproportionally amplified (because algorithms love divisive opinions so they get more clicks) so it further drives division and makes both sides more extreme. And even within those two sides they infight with each other who is more extreme and who is a traitor. All the while the rich are getting richer.
