If we were to ask two men if they would be happier with more or less testosterone, one could guess and say yes and another could say no, but there are very real physical effects to lowering your testosterone.
FtM trans say when they take testosterone they become much more motivated, less moody, have a better sex drive.
Taking away a mans testosterone has the effect of making him depressed, lazy and lowering sex drive, in some cases completely removing it.

So when someone makes the decision to lower their testosterone and start taking estrogen it's a coin flip to whether they'll actually find happiness, but someone can point to the real physical effects and see that it will make their lives worse in many ways.

I know and know of mtfs that are very happy with hrt and even srs. I've read (on reddit, I know) about mtfs that regret all of it. It differs from person to person. So you're right, it is kinda like a coin flip. It can be tragic, but it's their right to flip that coin.
