This and the hype cycles of computer science. Tech companies all go through cycles of over hiring then firing staff when they realize they hired too many. We're currently in the firing part of that cycle.

Physics being so high up is strange to me. Given it's a very flexible degree. With some minimal extra qualifications you can easily work in a number of fields (economy, programming, R&D, technical consulting etc.).

Maybe it's just people who had bad grades or they didn't get a Masters. Or are just holding out for a job in academia which is very limited.

I think a big part is that, while on paper this is true, the opportunities for networking in an applied field (whereas physics is basic science) pale in comparison to those available to people already in those same fields. I had a good GPA and excellent research and graduated from a state flagship but I still held internships at my school's compute cluster to hedge against a bad grad app cycle.

If you just study physics (and most don't specialize in practical stuff) you just hope to stay in academia or some other research institutions and the demand foe those isn't that big. Same applies to biology and chemistry
>With some minimal extra qualifications you can easily work in a number of fields (economy, programming, R&D, technical consulting etc.).
At that point you could've just studied engineering

It's also smart to pick a protected field such as medicine or law where they have an iron grip on who's allowed to practice it.

>encouraged their children to get college degrees

rinse and repeat. Everytime someone cracks the code when it comes to easy employment they tell all their retarded friends and children and flood the market one generation later. You watch, it wont be long until we have too many plumbers and electricians. everyone's saying trade jobs are the new meta rn

Nursing can easily lead into management or supervisory roles where you do fuck all while presiding over LPN whores running around clucking. Or if you give a shit about people train up and go for nurse practitioner.
