Do you think most people are kind-natured? Even if they are unaware that they are. I think I believe this subconsciously and it kind of hurts to think that maybe it isn't the case.

People are inherently selfish and will do anything which they believe to be in their own interest, no matter how morally repugnant. After they have done it, they will come up with whatever post-hoc moral justification required to justify said action.
