I'm 30. Would it be dumb to try and self learn piano?

No. People taught themselves paino 100 years ago, you can teach yourself paino now. This is the easiest time in history for learning.

Ask yourself your purpose. What are you trying to accomplish? Then if you feel okay about it go on.

people on other forums say you need a teacher or you will be utter shit. which somewhat doesn't make sense because at some point someone had no teacher

What kind of music would you like to learn to play? ^^

I did it when I was 19, but I don't have a musical ear, so it would take me a whole year to learn one piece. I got tired of practicing the same thing over and over again until I gave it up.

I was able to play this though

half done with this

and a quarter done with this

The "needing" a teacher part is classism to a certain degree, sure you should learn music theory but to say you need a teacher to do it is stupid since you can read it on your own, I self learnt to play the piano and accordion and never got any help from anyone else, I.E it's classist bullshit

Nice

But I'm 30 too, and the way I've seen things is that time only moves in one way. You're going to be 40 in 10 years, so do you want to be a 40 year old who plays piano or not? Because that choice is entirely up to you. Fuck the past, fuck what you could have done, that shit is over. You didn't do it. So are you going to keep not doing it or are you going to do it? The power is all in your hands.

what is stopping you? seriously. all this worrying about age is useless. Sure, you aren't going to be a prodigy anytime soon, but at least its something you can brag about at the bar

piano is basically a videogame instrument, it is maybe the instrument you can get the most good at regardless of age, granted the ceiling is also incredibly high

there are people who decide to start living at 70 and kill it. that's 20 years until they're 90. way more than enough to become a prodigy at something, let alone learn something for the sake of enjoyment.
