Understandably, most people dont wanna become tang so they are fighting the space angels using giant cyborgs made out of dead angels.

I've given up trying to make any sense of it and anno probably just made a mecha anime and chucked in whatever he wanted into the script for that week.

First the backstory: life on earth was created by an ancient race of aliens. To achieve this, the aliens send one of their kind to each planet. By mistake two aliens were sent to earth. To remedy this, one alien (Adam) puts itself into hibernation so the other alien (Lilith) can create its life. Fast forward 900 million years, and humans discover both alien bodies. They try to combine human DNA with Adam, but it creates a giant explosion, killing 90% of people and destroying the oceans. Basically once the Dead Sea Scrolls have been achieved, humanity will be given a wish by Lilith. Gendo wants to wish his dead wife back into life. After typing this, I realize how complicated all this shit is and don't even want to get into the Evas, main characters, etc.
