This has been a thing in white collar READ: HIGH CLASS settings for about a decade now. The logic is that it makes your message seem more "friendly" and "approachable"! Unlike the hostile period that meanies only use when they're mad. It's since trickled down to the zoomoid generation where they actually take offense at text messages ending in proper punctuation periods.
Seriously, there's articles written by actual linguistics professors that examine this phenomenon.
