Honestly though. Those who were unable to provide for themselves lived off of charity or they starved. Artificially propping up millions of people (a large chunk of whom are perfectly able to work but unwilling to do so) is not good for society.

No way in hell theres 40 million people who actually need it, theyre taking advantage of the bad oversight, bet that if the gov actually If investigated and cut off those who are taking advantage, it would decrease this number by more than half. The responsibility for this is likely falls under state supervision and jurisdiction, so blue state shitholes will just let it happen and dont give a shit, whoever wants to receive money receives it, even if they dont need it and can get a job when they want, free to leech as much as they want.

I just wish they could acknowledge the system is heavily abused by people who have no desire to work, and there is multi generational families that raise their kids to rely on welfare instead of working, ensuring the issue is never corrected. It should be considered a massive flaw to pay less out for people once they enter the work force as well, if you really want to reintegrate them you should pay next to nothing to someone who doesn't work in any capacity with or without children no exception, only upping the amount after they get hired in somewhere.
