I won't speculate on what is and is not true, but rather on what the stoics would say is and is not true. And in this they were rather clear; that it is not your emotions you can control, but your attachments, desires, and aversions.

It is slightly ironic that you would suggest Buddhism and stoicism differ in controlling the "emotions", when in truth they are not too dissimilar either in doctrine or practice. Take what Epictetus says in picrel regarding managing attachments as an example. He is not saying with preparation you can control your emotions, but rather that by controlling your desires/attachments (something which is in your control) you may not despair as much when you encounter loss (loss and change being permanent fixtures in both stoicism and Buddhism).
