Well, whether or not you're going with that specific argument, child exploitation's still a major theme in Made in Abyss. Orphaned children are routinely sent into an eldritch pit for profit. When they misbehave, they're subjected to BDSM bullshit by their sadistic headmistress. The theme's impossible to overlook, and can't simply be set aside whenever Tsukushi decides it's actually fine and kinda funny for Riko to get rimmed by a transmogrified sex offender.
Maybe you're right and the whole thing does serve his storytelling purposes, but it also hamstrings his storytelling.
