True they begin being disadvantaged people that work hard at the beginning, but all of that rings hollow( pun intended ) when at the end of the series it is revealed that the character was chosen by fate to have always been special, Ichigo started as just a rando with Shinigami powers, but as the series went on, more and more secrets about his origin were revealed, the fact that his father was a captain level Shinigami, or that his mother was a top pure blooded quincy + the Aizens White hollow powers inside him + him being potential new soul King etc.
TL;DR; whatever underdog status potential this characters had went out the window as the story progressed
