Yes he did. The choice was to try fighting him, even if he died trying. He would've actually had a legacy in that case, as Zenitsu would be motivated to avenge him, and Gramps would be still be alive to guide him through that. But because he became a demon, he gets nothing. This message is repeatedly emphasized in the story; how is this hard to get?
