Some species of albatross can live up to 80 years and yet only lay one egg every two years. Conversely the longest lived rodents will still produce multiple offsping in one mating. It's not even a size thing as larger canids (.e.g wolves) and feliforms (eg lions) will still give birth to a whole litter of pups or cubs. I guess the main thing is how much time does a parent invest in raising their offspring is what determines how many childeren they have.
