Nah, a lot of MCs are bland. It's a very common problem that's not a deadly flaw. I really think the true problem is the cool factor. If he was cooler in general, he'd have a lot more leeway. Being a shota puts huge pressure on him to prove himself to the reader constantly, but he's written like a much more normal protag.
